Introducing another Emilee

Good morning. I just joined and I thought I would introduce myself. I'm Emilee, I live in Albuquerque with my fiance', his son, a dog, a snake and 2 cats - Gryffin and Lupin. I enjoy knitting and crochet and a bunch of other crafts, too. I do have a Christmas stocking on the needles for my step son in Gryffindor's house colors. I'd like to make him a Weasly sweater, too. My sister-in-law wants some Gryffindor socks, but she's vegan and I'm having a hard time finding vegan sock yarn, if you guys have any ideas, let me know. You can check out my blog, Auntie Em Knits for more about me.

Happy knitting.

Emilee

Hello Emilee :) I have yet to post my hello to the group, but I wanted to at least say hi to you since you beat me to it! ;) As for vegan yarn . . there's always soy or bamboo based yarns that you can look for. I know I've got some here that I'm using for socks.

Welcome! :D

Why would you want vegan yarn? I can understand wanting cotton because it's absorbant and cool, but why specifically vegan?

I would think that your only option for yarn that a vegan would accept is some sort of organic cotton (other plant fibers might not do since you wouldn't necessarily know if pesticides that might harm insects had been used). Fox Fiber comes to mind - I have some unspun Fox Fibre cotton, but they have yarns too. Here is a link.

I suppose you could also use synthetics - a vegan acquaintance of mine uses synthetic yarn, but she mostly makes hats and not socks.

To answer Jo's question, Deb is completely vegan which means she does not use or consume animal products of any kind. No dairy, cheese, wool, etc. I've been able to find cotton sock yarn, but not in Gryffindor colors. With sock yarn you have to make sure it has elastic or spandex in it, eitherwise the socks will do that sad droop around your ankle thing. She would go for soy, I think, I know she eats soy products. I even asked if I could use wool from a humane ranch and she didn't want that. So I can make her socks, just not Gryffindor socks yet, so if anyone sees burgandy and gold cotton sock yarn, let me know.

Welcome!
I wish I had a good answer for vegan giftees. Maybe you could find a cotton sock yarn with elastic in it.
