My S.P.E.W Hat Project

S.P.E.W. #1

I started my first S.P.E.W hat the other day. I am a terribly slow knitter. What I wouldn't give to learn to Charm my knitting needles so they'd knit fast or by themselves. That would take care of my stockinette boredom. Of course, I have been hiding this from my husband. I have a lot of unfinished knitted items I need to finish up.

Anyway, I am going to finish off the top with an I-cord knot. The stitch pattern is called Peppercorn Stitch...it's sort of a bobble. It reminds me of an old lamp my mom had...which inspired me for the next hat....same stitch patt, but this time I'll add a ruffled brim. After that one I'll knit a beehive hat. I am just not sure if I want to knit it in yellow or go for an off ball color...

I like the look of that stitch. A ruffled brim will look great with it.

Since you're aiming to duplicate hats Hermione might have knit, I don't think you're constrained in any way by color or even design.

She does talk about knitting bobbles, but that's about all. Her early ones seem to have lots of mistakes, though.

Being a child, without her own income, she couldn't possibly be able to afford expensive yarn. Or be too choosy about the color.

I'm not exactly aiming to duplicate Hermione' hats exactly, just the idea. (Unfortunately, as I don't know any house elves or their dwellings, the hats will be going to my local children's hospital) I eventually want to create some hats with ears already built in. As for yarn--oooo I have OODLES of one skein wonder colors, all in acrylic. (I plan on using acrylic since it's easily washed--I am expecting them to be thoroughly washed again when I give the lot to the hospital)

Great design, I understand about "hiding the hat from DH" LOL. At least hats are portable- can go anywhere. good start on a project for a good cause.
